A-Frame HousingRethinking Affordable Housing
More space. Greater dignity. Smarter use of every rand.
Rethinking affordable housing. Redefining infrastructure.
BRC is developing an A-Frame housing concept that challenges conventional thinking about affordable housing, construction costs and the value delivered per square metre. Through precision-designed, prefabricated housing, we aim to explore faster, more standardised construction and adaptable homes for different communities and needs.
Where this project stands
Concept stage: the need, the solution and the delivery model are defined. The next step is validation with technical, site and funding partners.

Who defined the rate per square metre?
Price, or living space?
South Africa needs a more transparent conversation about affordable housing. Are we measuring affordability by the price of a house, or by how much safe, functional living space a household receives for its money? The objective is not simply to build cheaper houses. It is to improve the relationship between cost, space, quality, durability and long-term value.
Precision-built, standardised construction
- Factory-made modular panels
- Standardised A-frame design
- Faster on-site assembly
- Energy-efficient and solar-ready
- Designed for repeatable production
Five housing categories
- Lower-income households Practical, cost-conscious homes that improve access to secure and dignified accommodation.
- Student accommodation Scalable, NSFAS-aligned opportunities, subject to institutional requirements, standards and viable funding or procurement.
- Single mothers and their children Functional homes designed around family life, safety, privacy and mothers building economic independence.
- GBV relief and transitional housing Accommodation for survivors and their children, developed with appropriate safety, privacy, support services and referrals.
- Community, rural and workforce housing Adaptable homes for rural communities, emerging economic centres and workers who need housing near employment.
Categories describe the applications the concept is being designed for. They are not current developments.

More than a roof
A home is the foundation for family stability, education, safety, health and economic participation. BRC’s A-Frame concept positions housing as enabling infrastructure, connecting people to dignity, opportunity and stronger communities, while creating local manufacturing, jobs and skills.
Let’s rethink what affordable housing can deliver
We invite housing institutions, public-sector bodies, landowners, developers, investors and implementation partners to explore the feasibility of the BRC A-Frame housing model. The challenge is clear: can we deliver more meaningful living space, at a viable cost, without compromising safety, compliance or quality?
